Biohack-Hers, Chronological vs Biological Age, Ketones Comparison & Neuroprotection

Biohackers know that to truly take control of your body’s output, you need to first control the input — beginning with what nutrients it receives.

1. Biohack-Hers

Women are biohackers by nature, tuning into their bodies since the beginning of time.

A new Youtube Channel explores the evolutionary arc of vitality, longevity, and the age-old human pursuits that are driving some of today’s hottest wellness trends.

Humans are feel-good addicts constantly chasing the next hit of happiness and forever seeking out ways to optimize our days. As a species, we have been after a similar set of health goals and altered states for eternity– from better sleep to more satisfying serotonin hits.

But a groundswell of innovation (across science, technology, psychology, energy medicine, and the intersection of all these fields) is igniting a biohacking revolution and taking elevated human states to astonishing new heights.

2. How biohacking technology is reshaping the medical field

"I think that longevity, anti-aging, anything that's preventative, should be a part of routine health care. Unfortunately, insurance companies don't always see it that way."

- Dr. Jake Deutsch

Biohacking gives a better picture of a person’s health by using technology that’s not normally found at a traditional primary care professional’s office.

Information collected enables a doctor to follow data and better address a patient’s concerns, sometimes before a patient is even aware of.

3. Living healthier & longer: chronological vs. biological age

"Nutrition is King, Exercise is Queen, put them together and you have a Kingdom” - Jack LaLanne.

Living longer and staying healthy as we age is tricky. We all age at different rates. These differences are reflected in biomarkers that can predict biological age. IGF1, insuling, glucose, CRP and triglycerides are indicators of metabolic age. High Blood Pressure is an indicator of CardioVascular age.

Telomeres are a protective cap at the end of our chromosomes that shorten with age. They could predict both how long and how well we live. Small healthy lifestyle behaviours can have positive impacts on telomere length.

Broadly speaking, the main lifestyle interventions known to regulate the ageing process and extend healthspan are:

  1. Exercise
  2. Nutrition
  3. Exercise & Caloric Restriction Mimetics
  4. Rejuvenation - Repairing and Reversing Age

On his 90th birthday, Jack LaLanne could still do 90 pushups. He lived vibrantly, dispensing his health and fitness advice with conviction and humor until the age of 96.

4. The cause of insulin resistance diseases

A result of the exponential rise in the consumption of highly processed foods that lack the appropriate nutrients.

There is little doubt that the explosion in insulin resistance diseases, including diabetes, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, polycystic ovarian disease, and dementia, followed revolutionary changes in the Western diet that resulted in an exponential rise in the consumption of highly processed foods that either lack the appropriate nutrients for long-term support of CNS and systemic metabolic functions, or contain added ingredients that impair protective actions of natural food substances.

5. Neuroprotection: evidence-based tips

Aerobic Exercise, Caloric Restriction, Omega 3s, B vitamins

Based on data culled from a broad range of studies on the effectiveness of lifestyle and dietary measures for supporting brain health and providing some degree of neuroprotection, the following conclusions could be drawn:

Aerobic exercise and caloric restriction significantly improve cognitive performance and slow progression toward neurodegeneration.

These effects are mediated by enhancement of insulin and IGF responsiveness and slowing of the aging process, in part due to SIRT1 activation. AD is mediated in large measure by brain insulin resistance and impaired energy metabolism. Therefore, measures that support or bolster insulin sensitivity, including exercise, caloric restriction, and loss of excess weight retard both aging and lower the risk of AD.

Dietary supplements such as Omega-3 fatty acids and compounds such as chromium picolinate, curcumin, alpha lipoic acid, cinnamon, and red bean lectin, that have insulin sensitizing properties, could help support neuronal plasticity and signaling mechanisms.

Agents that reduce oxidative stress, including fat soluble vitamins, natural statins such as those supplied in red yeast rice , and polyphenols, including those present in red wine, green tea, curcumin, and soy isolate protein, reduce the generation of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species, DNA damage, and activation of pro-inflammatory, pro-injury, and pro-death signaling;

Ample supplementation with multiple B vitamins that support nervous system and cardiovascular function, and reduce homocysteine levels are neuroprotective.

6. Exogenous ketones comparison: ketone esters, ketone salts and C8 MCT oil

Ketone Esters vs C8 MCT Oil Blood Ketone Elevation Comparison
Source: KetoSource

Studies have shown that the brain which normally uses glucose for energy, can readily utilize Ketone Bodies (KB) as an alternative metabolic fuel. Even when there is diminished glucose utilszation in cognition-critical brain areas, as may occur early in Alzheimer's disease (AD), there is preliminary evidence that these same areas remain capable of metabolizing KBs.

When administered orally in controlled dosages, these esters can produce plasma KB levels comparable to those achieved by the most rigorous Keto Diet, thus providing a safe, convenient, and versatile new approach to the potential treatment of a variety of diseases, including epilepsy, AD, and Parkinson's disease.

On a Ketogenic Diet: As glucose availability diminishes, KBs manufactured in the liver from Fatty Acids mobilized from fat tissue become major sources of energy for muscle, heart, and brain. (source)

KetoneAid KE4 raises ketone levels faster, to the highest peak, and sustains them longer than any MCT Oil or Ketone Salts.

A serving of KE4 contains 5g more BHB than HVMN resulting in the higher ketone elevation as charted above.

To achieve a therapeutic blood ketone range of 2-4 mmol, you would have to consume:

  • 38g of Ketone Salts (that's a lot of salt!)
  • 50ml of C8 MCT Oil (3 tablespoons)
  • 20ml of KE4 Ketone Ester (1/3rd of a bottle)

C8 MCT Oil provides the most prolonged elevation, though never gets close to the peak offered by a ketone ester. With MCT oil, the expectation should be no more than a 1mmol increase over baseline. C8 MCT oil is the most cost effective and convenient approach.

It's most suitable for:

  1. People not on ketogenic diets who want some of the ‘satiation benefits’ of ketosis.
  2. People on ketogenic diets who already have raised ketones and only want another 1mmol boost.

A 38g dose of Ketone Salts (2 standard servings) can also offer a peak on par with Esters, although consuming this quantity of salts on a regular basis is a challenge due to palatability and the amount of sodium.

Ketone Salts are the most cost effective way to get into a a therapeutic range of 2-4mmol. However, the more efficient, convenient, most gut-tolerable and sustainable approach is to use Ke4 Ketone Ester.
