Cold-activated Brown Fat in Cancer Therapy, Akkermansia, Vitalik Buterin's Supplement Routine, HMOs, Green Tea for Longevity and Reversing Sarcopenia
October 31, 2022In this post:
- Cold-activated brown fat may help starve tumours of fuel.
- What is Akkermansia and how does it work?
- What does Vitalik Buterin supplement with?
- HMOs - food for beneficial bacteria.
- Matcha, the best drink for longevity.
- Involuntary muscle loss begins at 30. Here's how to reverse it.
1. Cold-activated brown fat could be a promising approach to cancer therapy
The research carried out at Sweden's Karolinska Institutet hints at the possibility that cold temperatures can help starve tumour cells of a vital fuel source.
In particular, the study focuses on brown fat, which, unlike white fat, burns away energy to keep the body warm in colder temperatures.
Cold-activated brown fat was found to compete against tumours for glucose and help inhibit tumour growth in mice.
Interestingly, high sugar drinks seem to cancel out the effect of cold temperatures on cancer cells, suggesting that limiting glucose supply is probably one of the most important methods for tumour suppression.

2. What is Akkermansia and how does it work?
Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are considered the superstar bacterias for our gut. However, recent studies show a promise for Akkermansia as the next generation of beneficial gut microbes.
Akkermansia muciniphila feeds on mucin, a glycoprotein that regulates the thickness of our gut intestinal mucosal layer.
As a byproduct Akkermansia produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that strengthen the gut intestinal barrier preventing unwanted material from passing into circulations.
"Think of your gut lining as a coffee filter, it lets the good stuff (coffee) in and keeps the bad stuff (coffee grinds) out."
While scientists are still discovering the exact way how Akkermansia works, higher Akkermansia levels have already been linked to better metabolic health, gut function and immune health.
Up until now, there haven’t been any probiotic products that actually provide Akkermansia. Thanks to cutting-edge technology, Pendulum was able to offer a powerful blend of Akkermansia and prebiotic inulin in a capsule form.

Vitalik Buterin is co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain and cryptocurrency. Vitalik appeared on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list at the age of 23 when his wealth was about $400 million. Since then Vitalik's personal fortune grew to $1.4 billion, making him one of the youngest crypto billionaires.
On the Tim Ferris podcast, Vitalik discusses his daily health routine which includes intermittent fasting and his prefered supplements.

4. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) are great for adults too
Making up 30% of all breast milk, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are the first prebiotic compounds that a breastfed newborn will encounter. They are proving to be beneficial to adults too.
HMOs are unique because they avoid metabolism by digestive enzymes until they reach the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This allows beneficial microorganisms to break them down through fermentation.
2′-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL) is an HMO that only certain species can metabolize making it an effective selective feeding source for Bifidobacteria and Akkermansia.
Moreover, 2’-FL molecules can act as binding decoys to biological toxins and external microorganisms that are known disruptors of the GI. This activity helps minimize the amount of external microorganisms launching infections and triggering the inflammatory response.
Layer Origin PureHMO® is a fermented high-purity human milk oligosaccharide that offers multiple health benefits without any actual breast milk in the product.

5. The best drink for longevity
The best age-promoting drink might already be stored in your kitchen. Green tea is a super beverage that contains antioxidants, potent phenolic compounds and powerful disease-fighting phytonutrients.
Drinking green tea has been linked to a longer and healthier life due to its cancer-fighting and cardiovascular protective properties. A 2007 review of studies shows the correlation between green tea consumption and a decreased number of cardiovascular health problems. Green tea is an excellent drink for the gut, with matcha green tea being especially rich in polyphenols that can feed beneficial microbes in our gut, like Akkermansia muciniphila.

6. Reverse muscle loss & build more
The process of involuntary muscle loss is called sarcopenia and it can start as early as age 30. Moreover, muscle mass decreases approximately 3-8% per decade, and the rate of decline is even higher after the age of 60.
Luckily, with good nutrition and resistance training, this process can be reversed.
Low amino acid levels could be a par of the problem, which leads to low levels of hormones, neurotransmitters, bone loss, and loss of muscle strength. Some of the elderly can’t afford a high-nutrition diet, and some simply don’t know what good nutrition looks like - they don’t eat well or don’t supplement correctly.
The protein synthesis with Perfect Amino is fast, and there can be an immediate systematic difference. For example, elderly people who had lost strength and couldn’t get up from a chair without difficulty were given ten grams of Perfect Amino. After about fourty-five minutes, they were able to stand more easily.
